–By the end of this lesson, students will have listened to and read chapter 4 of Blueback. They will then complete a number of activities to examine some of the words used to analyse a text.

  • WHAT ARE DENONTATIONS and CONNOTATIONS?

  • activities -Write the ‘environment words’ into your book,  POSITIVE,  NEGATIVE or NEUTRAL connotations
  • Revision questions on the author’s word choices for describing the setting, context and issues
  • Activity - novel words used --. Read the speech.
     Write the DENOTATION and identify the CONNOTATIONS of each underlined word.
     For example:
    The denotation of the word  VISCERA is internal organs, intestines or guts.
    Viscera has negative connotations of horror and danger.
  • environmental words -Find 10 more words of your own from Chapter 4 to add to your list. Try look for words that are related to the environment or other issues you know the novel is about.
